The St Petersburg Textile Artists' Guild with the support of the State Museum of the History of St Petersburg (Russia)  welcomes the II International Mini-textiles Triennial “Treasure Island. City”.
The St John Ravelin of the St Petersburg Fortress welcomes 165 artists from 19 countries to show their mini-textiles in the very heart of the city. Each artist is going to show their “city in the palm of the hand” through their vision of what the past, present and future of a city may be like. This unique project presents new trends in artistic textiles, as well as raises important issues of urban environment.
The concept is to uncover what urban life is. A city has always been a unique enclave, like an island, a focal point of material and human resources. Historically, whether it's a small settlement, a town, or a huge city, it has had its own lifestyle and followed certain laws. All cities are similar in some way and each one is unique in its own way.
“Treasure Island” is a general idea of our project. It is about a city and its hidden treasures: material and spiritual, big and small. Clearly, the biggest treasure to a city is its citizens. It's the people who transform the uninhabited cold space and fill it with the warmth of their hearts.
The mini format (works under 20x20 cm) is in line with the ancient tradition in this crafts. Before making a bigger piece, the artist would create a sample in order to try out the density, texture or color of the future work. In modern world mini textiles have evolved into a separate genre that allows for brave and original experiments.
The “Treasure Island. City” project has encouraged artists to use a variety of techniques, both traditional and experimental. This has inspired a wealth of important and sometimes very personal readings of the general theme.
Without a doubt, the “Treasure Island. City” is aimed at introducing mini-textiles to broader audiences and promoting international exchange of ideas. We do hope the visitors will enjoy the atmosphere and find their own city among those treasures.
