Brief History of 'Textile Forum'

back to overview

Textile Forum Service grew out of Textilwerkstatt-Verlag (Textile Workshop Publications) at the beginning of 1998.

Since 1983, the main task undertaken by this small publishing house has been publication of TEXTILFORUM magazine. Until 1993 this was done for the benefit of Textilforum Association, a non-profit organisation. In addition, specialist German-language books and manuals that were useful to Association members were published.

The publishing house did not exist before 1983. The magazine belonged to the Textilforum Association that was founded, upon an initiative by Beatrijs Sterk, in 1981. From 1982, the publication was produced by Beatrijs Sterk in her Textile Workshop.

Beatrijs Sterk began operating the Workshop as a training institution for textile designers, course instructors and lecturers in 1978. This was a development of the Hannover Workshop, Centre for Creative Design, which she had founded, together with two German colleagues, after a Dutch model, upon her arrival in Hannover from Holland in 1971.

Since the political changes that took place in Europe in 1989/90, Textile Workshop Publications have concentrated on preparing parallel publications of its printed products in English, beginning in 1994. The publishing house was increasingly obliged to perform services for the European Textile Network founded in 1990; the restructuring of its activities this required has led, inter alia, to its new name of 'Textile Forum Service'.

Notes of Textile Forum Magazine

TEXTILE FORUM enables people to make professional contacts and to exchange information and experiences despite national, ethnical, social and cultural confinements. The magazine reports on exhibitions, conferences, symposia, competitions, further education, fairs and markets in Europe and overseas. It provides information about projects, reports on their themes, their aims and opportunities to take part in them and is supplying dates, names and addresses. Many contributions are linked on the internet with the authors', organisers' and/or producers' own websites. Readers are thus assisted in further research.

TEXTILE FORUM broadens its readers' understanding of particular fields of research, development and practice. The magazine gives authors working innovatively in their various fields an opportunity to speak, for example, about everyday life aesthetics, historical contexts, new production and distribution methods, teaching and learning methods and also about questions concerning the development of art and design.

TEXTILE FORUM gives its readers access to the international media i.e. magazines, books, exhibition catalogues, informal publications etc. The magazine includes regular book reviews and an overview of new books.

TEXTILE FORUM offers, above all, a platform for discussions and aims to promote cross-cultural and interregional dialogue. It would like to help to clarify points of view in order to contribute to the wealth of textile culture in European regions. The magazine would like to build bridges between people in the various textile fields and help to make it easier for its readers to meet others, to communicate and to work together.

TEXTILE FORUM has a long tradition. There has been a German edition of the magazine since 1982. It has readers from many countries all over the world. Since 1994 Textile Forum also has been published in English, continuously expanding its scope by foreign readers and correspondents. The co-operation with other magazines and specialised associations could thus be improved essentially.

The European Textile Network has been co-editor of the magazine since the foundation of the ETN Association in 1993. Together ETN and TEXTILE FORUM are building up new links for the international media in the field of textiles, e.g. through the extensive ETN website with its online database providing events and addresses. This will improve the basis of information of national specialist journals.

TEXTILE FORUM readers are the first to receive information and if they become members of ETN they have the opportunity to subscribe to the magazine at a reduced price.

TEXTILE FORUM offers organizers and authors from all over the world an opportunity to publish dates and articles accompanied by visuals. Written material should preferably be typed and submitted in English or German after prior consultation with the editorial staff. We can, however, also use other texts written in native languages in exceptional cases. Photographs should be originals. Colour reproductions should be sent in slide form. All authors' rights for written and visual materials are reserved. The magazine cannot pay fees for articles; publications should be free of charge and serve mutual interest. All visuals are returned after use.

TEXTILE FORUM is linked - through its editing office - with a mail order book service offering books and catalogues about textile culture and annually adds about 30 international new books to its selling list.

TEXTILE FORUM is an ideal advertising medium for services and products for international distribution, both in the print version as also on the internet. The magazine offers a range of special terms and conditions for cultural institutions and enterprises e.g. for exhibition organisers, galleries, workshops, further education institutions and for specialist shops and businesses supplying artists' requirements (see Media information: Advertisers).
