Review
First published under the title “Mailles, les mouvements du fil” in
France in 2003, this book has now been translated by Sandy Black for
an English edition. The author has been teaching hand and machine knitting
at university level for more than thirty years. When she was unable to
find a publication for creative knitting in the book trade that was neither
an instruction manual nor overly industry oriented, she sat down at her
desk to write her own, and immediately came up with a classic!
The publication keeps its promise of providing inspiration for creative
knitting designs in its 17 chapters, from simple patterns and open knitting
structures to ribbed knittings and multi-coloured jacquard knittings.
I whole-heartedly agree with the author’s advice to knitting designers:
any training for industrial knitting should be combined with training
in hand-knitting so that students learn to keep control of every stitch
at all times, and maintain a creative attitude when using machines.
The book has been written for students, but it is equally instructive
for designers who were not trained in knitting techniques; for craftspeople
and artists; and even for beginners wishing to acquire an understanding
of knitting. The publication concludes with some practical hints, and
offers a comprehensive glossary.
