Review
The 2nd volume, covering Great Britain, introduces 10 textile artists
who lean towards painting and sculpture rather than design. This is in
accordance with the
selection made by the curator of the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester,
Dr. Jennifer Harris. Among the British artists working with sculpture
she includes Janet Ledsham, Shelly Goldsmith, Sally Freshwater, Cantine
Broadhead and Rushton Aust, whereas she would tend to classify Jo Budd,
Polly Bins and Alice Kettle as artists working in a painterly style. Michael
Brennand-Wood uses many non-textile materials in this sculptural works,
and Lesley Mitchinson's defamiliarized objects of clothing follow entirely
new avenues.
The book project was sponsored by Southern Arts and the new Museum of
Modern Craft of Hampshire County Council. Thanks to public funding the
artists were also able to contribute very highquality photographs. Depending
on the writing skills of the individual participating artists, the descriptions
of their own working methods vary enormously, but they always present
a very personal view of the author.
