Art Textiles of the World: Scandinavia Volume Two

ed. Matthew Koumis

back to short view

The second part of the series, "Art Textiles of the World", this volume on Scandinavia describes another ten artists from Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden, both well known great names and the younger generation.

Review

As in volume one, the editor selected the textile artists presented in this second edition himself, taking into consideration both older and younger artists. The oldest is the Finnish woman Maija Lavonen, born in 1931, the youngest another Finn, Silja Puranen, born in 1961. The Scandinavian attitude of political commitment in textile art is only represented by the work of Norwegian Bente Saetrang. Ingunn Skoghol/N stands for natural impressionism while Monica Nielsson/S represents performance instal-lations. In the first edition Koumis already gave his opinion of what he considers Scandinavian (cf. TF 2/05, p. 40): a link with nature, a yearning for light, utilisation of both traditional and high-tech textiles, a preference for linear designs and a relationship with the architectural environment.
