Pre-conference workshops

Saturday 10 - Wednesday 14 September: Location no. 3

   
1) Jacquard weaving on the TC1 pattern loom, Vibeke Vestby - Previous experience of weaving and use of computers (Photoshop) required. Weavings will be produced on a black cotton warp (36 threads/cm). A TC1 loom and several computers are available. Preference will be given to Turkish participants. - The 5-day course will be charged at Euro 90.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half).
Vibeke Vestby/DK used to work as a weaving lecturer for the National College of Art and Design, Oslo. She developed the TC1, created CAD weaving programmes and teaches the use of the TC1 pattern loom all over the world.
   
Monday 12 - Wednesday 14 September: Location no. 3

   
2) Paper from plants, Andrea Liebl - Plants and raw materials indigenous to the region will be used. The programme includes paper-making and the creation of sculptural objects. - The 3-day course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half).
Andrea Liebl/A is an art therapist and a visual arts teacher; she creates paper art objects and often participates in symposia and exhibitions, both at home and abroad.
   
3) From silk paper to felt, Inge Evers - This artist uses silk paper and felted silk as media for her creative work, and has developed special techniques to suit them. During the workshop a joint artwork will be produced. - The 3-day course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half). A material package costing Euro 4 .- will be handed out on location.
Inge Evers/NL completed a university course in felting as an art form, an art therapy and a means of collectively designing art objects. Specialised in creating silk paper, she has participated in international paper biennials and gives lectures and workshops all over the world.

Shibori, Karla de Ketelaere - Cotton and silk samples dyed and painted with reactive dyes will be produced, using techniques such as kanobo, kumo, nui, maki-age, arashi and itajime. - The 3-day course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half).

Karla de Ketelaere/B has studied ro-shibori since 1992 , and obtained an MA degree in textile design from Barcelona university. She designs shibats  wall hangings, participates in worldwide exhibitions, and gives classes in silk painting, batik and shibori.

   
5) Photos on textiles, Silja Puranen - Small works of art will be created by a combination of photographic images and textile materials, using CAD software and transfer printing technology. Previous experience in image processing is desirable! - The 3-day course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half).
Silja Puranen/FIN is the current head of TEXO, the Finnish Association of Textile Artists and Designers; she has worked on putting photo images on felt and used textiles for ten years, and gives courses in such techniques in Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the UK.
   
6) Traditional Yazmacilik blockprinting, Professor Reyhan Kaya and Assistant Professor Özcan Uzkur - An introductory historic overview will be given in a slide show, followed by a practical trial involving block cutting, preparation of dyes, printing and finishing. Yazma denotes a specific group of figured textiles which are produced by block printing or hand painting. - The 3-day course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half). A material package costing Euro 15.- will be handed out on location.
Reyhan Kaya Ph.D. is Professor of Textile Printing at Marmara University, Istanbul, and also works as an artist and author in the field of traditional Turkish block printing.
Özcan Uzkur Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the same department of textile printing.
   
7) Traditional felting, Arif Cön - Called kececi, this felt designer introduces all the stages of felting, from kaziklama and oklavalama (application of pressure on wool) via dizleme (use of the knees) up to tiglama (smoothing the felt). - The 3-day course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half). Working materials will be handed out on location, e.g. materials costing Euro 5.- for a piece measuring 50 x 50 cm.
Arif Cön is the third generation in a family of felt craftsmen and an economics graduate. His studio in the town of Tire cooperates with the Textile Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dokuz Eylül University, Izmir.
   
8) Ebru, the art of marbling paper & kati, the art of cutting paper, Nuri Pinar Yildirim and Muhittin Tamay - Originating in Persia, ebru  developed from the preparation of calligraphic paper. It is recommended to bring light, hand-made paper (80g) to the venue. Kati  denotes cut-out paper ornamental designs and calligraphic texts, in which decorative paper or leather motifs and characters are glued onto paper of a different colour. - The 3-day dual course will be charged at Euro 60.- (Turks and Eastern Europeans will pay half). Materials for ebru and kati costing Euro 15 .- each will be handed out on location.
Nuri Pinar Yildirim studied tourism at Izmir Faculty of Economics, and has worked with ebru since 1979. He made the art of marbling popular both at home and abroad, and currently holds a teaching position at Izmir University.
Muhittin Tamay is descended from an Izmir family of handweaving artists; he learned ebru and kati from his father, and has taught classes in these techniques since 1998.
   
Monday 12 - Tuesday 13 September  
   
9) Felt workshop in Konya, including a visit to Catal Höyük, Mehmet Girgic - On Monday, 12th September 2005, Mehmet Girgic and his wife will introduce the craft of felting. The participants will collectively create an art object. Lunch will be included. On Tuesday, 13th Sept., a visit to the archaeological site of Catal Höyük, 60 km away, is planned, together with visits to collections of Konya's textile museums in three locations around the town, including lunch. - The 2-day stay in Konya will be charged at Euro 60.-, including the cost of materials, two meals, entrance fees and local transport. (Participants will pay the fee upon arrival to Mehmet Girgic.)
Mehmet Girgic is a third-generation felt designer. He works on commission for customers including foreign artists and dervish dancers (felt hats). He gives classes, some of them abroad, e.g. at the 2005 Surface Design Conference held in Kansas, USA.
Travel information: The bus trip from Istanbul to Konya is very cheap at ca. Euro 15.-, but takes ten hours. A one way flight from Istanbul to Konya costs 96 YTL (approx. Euro 58) and can be booked through a travel agency in the participant's own country or through the Venus address (see "Accommodation" - Note: The inland flight schedule for September now available). All return flights to Izmir require changing planes at Istanbul; alternatively, it is possible to take a bus from Konya to Izmir for ca. Euro 15.-, travelling time: nine hours. -

Speakers on Friday morning:

Jack Lenor Larsen/USA, spiritus rector  of contemporary textile design, is an advocate of the idea that traditional crafts are a source of design inspiration; Larsen has worked as a designer, fabric manufacturer and distributor, book author and exhibition organiser.
Polly Leonard/UK is the editor of Selvedge magazine which discusses ethnological subjects, textile crafts and the latest textile art.
Hülya Tezcan/Turkey is a curator of textiles at the Topkapi Palace Museum, and an Assistant Professor in the Master's programme of Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul.
Belkis Balpinar/Turkey is a former Curator of Textiles of the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and the founder of the Vakiflar Carpet and Kilim Museum, both in Istanbul; today she creates kilims and felt art objects.
Lala de Dios/Spain is President of the European Textile Network, President of the Asociación de Creadores Textiles de Madrid and Vice-President of Oficio y arte, the Spanish National Organisation for Crafts. She runs the weaving studio Estudio Textil Indigo in Madrid and has worked in international cooperation projects, a.o. with Morocco.
Marie-Thérèse Chaupin/France
is in charge of European relations at ATELIER (European Association for Textile Study, Liaison, Innovation & Research). She has worked a.o. in a cooperation project with Algeria.

  Return to the European side to Mimar Sinan University in the Queen's Palace on the Bosphorus, guided tour of the textile department with Professor Dilek Alpan

4.30 p.m. Visit to the Sadberk Hanim Museum, with a guided tour by the textile curator, Lale Görünür (until 6 p.m.)

Visit to the shop of Gönül Paksoy, a clothing, home accessories, jewellery and cuisine designer

8.00 p.m. A typical Turkish dinner in a "meyhane"


Travel costs: The 4-day trip will be Euro 278 maximum, with a reduction down to Euro 220.- minimum if the number of participants is large. (The amount will be debited to the participants' credit cards by the Venus Tourist Organisation ca. 4 weeks before commencement of the tour.) The price includes bus travel, 4 nights' accommodation/breakfast, lunch, entrance fees and guided tours.
