INVITATION

TO A MEETING AND EXHIBITION AT THE LINZ UNIVERSITY OF ART, DEPARTMENT OF TEXTILES/ART&DESIGN, AS PART OF THE 2009 ETN CONFERENCE:

PROFILES AND PERSPECTIVES IN EUROPEAN TEXTILE STUDIES

The Textiles/Art&Design Department of the University of Art, Linz, invites representatives of textile institutions at European universities to participate in a joint exhibition and symposium focusing on diverse profiles and perspectives in European textile studies.

  • Which issues characterise contemporary textile studies?
  • Where do fashion, design and art overlap in textile education?
  • What is the role of conceptual approaches, and that of materials and techniques?
  • What structural forms are used to convey subjects?
  • What methods are used to convey specific textile subjects?
  • What part can textile instruction play in university education?
  • What are the premises required for developing joint perspectives?

The variety of educational models developed in Europe, having different structures and heterogeneous priorities, constitute diverse attempts at addressing these questions. The Linz event offers a platform for discussing the issues, improving the transparency of profiles, and considering joint strategies in general to strengthen university-level textile education in Europe.

The subject matter will be the theme of two events:

EXHIBITION

An exhibition scheduled at the Gallery of Linz University of Art from Tuesday, 21st July, to Monday, 3rd August 2009, will allow various European textile institutions to illustrate their positions and provide insights into their working methods. The Gallery is situated in the city centre of Linz, the 2009 European Cultural Capital. Juxtaposition of diverse positions on textiles in consolidated form will make both lay and specialist visitors more aware of the approaches and issues that currently prevail in textile education.

Each participating institution will be represented at the exhibition by a digital presentation demonstrating its focus and conceptual approach, either through student pieces, a presentation of projects, or a description of its profile. In addition to this virtual display, each institution will exhibit a single physical object which, in its eyes, best epitomises its educational profile. The exhibit selected should be as compact as possible for trouble-free mailing and mounting.

No fees will be charged for participation in the exhibition, but exhibiting institutions are responsible for delivery of objects in due time, and obliged to pay for shipping costs to Linz. The University of Art will cover return shipping costs.

MEETING

On Tuesday, 21st July 2009, in rooms adjoining the Gallery, a meeting on the exhibition theme will be held to which representatives of all exhibiting institutions are warmly invited.

Selected speakers will give keynote speeches on the subject matter as starting points for discussions on the above-mentioned issues. Moreover, a tour of the exhibition will offer all representatives of exhibiting institutions an opportunity to explain their own approaches. The meeting aims to promote an international exchange among educational institutions, to contribute to a clearer definition of and reflection on their own profiles, and to prepare the way for across-the-board projects leading to closer cooperation in the future.

The official opening of the exhibition will take place on the symposium evening at 6 p.m. The Linz event forms part of the programme of the 2009 ETN (European Textile Network) Conference focusing on the cultural revival of old textile centres, to be held at the weaving town of Haslach, north of Linz, from 22nd to 24th July 2009. Participants will be able to attend both events. Following the exhibition opening in Linz, a shuttle service to Haslach will be provided for all participants wishing to attend the subsequent ETN Conference. Participants must pay for their own expenses at the Linz meeting; the conference language is English.
