OUR 2009 CONFERENCE HOSTS

After London, the next ETN Conference will take place in Haslach, a borough in the Austrian Mühlviertel district near the German and Czech borders and in Linz, the state capital of Upper Austria and 2009 European Cultural Capital. Like the neighbouring Waldviertel district, the Mühlviertel is a historic flax growing region where linen trade has been recorded since the Middle Ages. In the first half of the 19th century Haslach became the base of the Vonwiller company that employed up to 2,000 people. Its factory complex dominated the small settlement both architecturally and economically until the company went bankrupt in 1999, leaving behind a brownfield site. Now, almost 10 years later, the 2,500-strong community of Haslach has finally completed reviving the huge building complex, with funding from the Upper Austrian state government and the European Union, in a redevelopment scheme that has culminated in a Centre of Textile Culture to be inaugurated in 2009. It will house the existing local museum, a wool processing company called Haslacher Manufaktur,
a part of the Textile School – the only training facility for textile technicians still in existence in Austria – and Haslach Textile Culture, an association that organises extensive courses, lectures, exhibitions, and a weavers’ market each year, and is a long-standing ETN member.

The Textiles/Art & Design Department of Linz Art University and Haslach Textile Culture maintain close links with regard to the subjects they cover, as well as good personal relationships, especially between Professor Marga Persson, leader of the Textile Department at the Linz Art University, and her staff member Christina Leitner, board member of Haslach Textile Culture. She will be known to the Textile Forum readers among our ETN members as the author of “Papiertextilien” (Paper Textiles, see TF 4/04, p. 22/23) and as the person in charge of the project, “Spuren-suche/Design & Muster: Grenzenlos” (Tracing Designs & Patterns: Unlimited), which she undertook on behalf of two Mühlviertel weaving mills, and in her capacity as lecturer at
the Textile Department of Linz Art University (see TF 4/07, p. 36/37). Christina Leitner is also the person who coordinates the activities that concern us at ETN 2009 in Linz and Haslach.

THE OCCASION, BACKGROUND AND MOTTO FOR ETN 2009

When looking for an interesting venue for our next conference, the inauguration of the Haslach Textile Centre in the summer of 2009 seemed just right. We also felt that the close relationship between Haslach and Linz Art University provides a fitting background. We will be happy to take advantage of the added boon of Linz being the 2009 European Cultural Capital, even though this will somewhat complicate the situation as regards transport and accommodation. For most conference partici pants, Linz will be the point of arrival or departure by car, rail, or air. For this reason we plan a pre-conference session for members interested in educational matters at Linz Art Uni versity, and will provide a bus to take them to Haslach after the session. We have yet to settle on a focal theme, but it will throw light on the comparative educational situations encountered at various European institutions. An exhibition on the theme is planned, and Linz Art University will provide its gallery in the city centre as the exhibition venue. The working title of the core conference in Haslach is
“ Cultural revival of old textile centres through creative, educational, conservation and tourist initiatives” . The aim of the event is to begin linking comparable centres of textile culture on a Eu ropean level, for instance by an exchange of course instructors and other specialist staff, jointly organ ising and advertising touring exhibitions, and participating in other kinds of joint projects. Speakers from relevant textile regions
will be invited for this purpose.

NETWORKING

The diversity of the theme, which includes creative, educational, and tourist aspects, and addresses the role of museums in such centres, ensures that the Haslach conference will not be
a meeting for specialists only. The borough offers a good model – a museum that is inte grated with a wool-processing company and linked to a techni cal school with state-of-the-art equipment. Further links exist with Haslach Textile Culture, an association experienced in organising major events, which
is available as a contact for in terested parties in other Austrian or foreign regions.

For the first time in the his tory of ETN Conferences, there will be time for more than one day of networking among ETN members and their guests.

We expect to publish a detailed programme of events in late autumn of this year.

Please make a note of the ETN 2009 dates in your diaries.
